While COVID-19 is commonly associated with symptoms such as a cough, fever, fatigue, and shortness of breath, it can also manifest in lesser-known ways. One such unusual symptom, termed “COVID toes” by medical professionals and researchers, presents as swollen, discolored toes that can change from red to purple.
Here is everything you need to know about COVID toes, from causes and symptoms to treatment options.
What Causes COVID Toes?
There is no clear answer to what causes COVID toes. It could be a sign that your immune system is working to fight SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
Yet, if it’s not caused by COVID-19, it could be one of the following.
- Chilblains – Inflamed swollen patches and blistering that occur on the hands and feet in response to the skin’s exposure to cold temperatures.
- Angiogenesis – The formation of new blood vessels.
- Vasculitis – An autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the blood vessels.
- Vessel thrombosis – A condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a blood vessel, restricting blood flow.
What Are the Symptoms of COVID Toes?
No matter the cause, the most common symptoms of COVID toes are swelling and redness, which may gradually turn purple. Most people don’t feel anything and only notice these changes when looking at their toes.
But, along with swollen, discolored skin, it’s possible to have blisters, itchiness, pain, painful raised bumps, and areas of rough skin.
Who Gets COVID Toes?
COVID toes can appear at any age, but children, teenagers, and young adults are more likely to develop this condition. Young patients with COVID toes usually feel well and test negative for the virus. They usually had mild symptoms of COVID-19 or didn’t have any symptoms.
Some people with Long COVID develop COVID toes. Long COVID is a chronic condition in which the symptoms of COVID are present for at least three months. This occurs more in people who had a severe SARS-CoV-2 infection, but anyone can experience it, including children.
How to Treat COVID Toes
Most cases of COVID toes tend to resolve themselves without treatment after 10 to 14 days, but some can last for months. If you experience any pain or itching, you can try applying a hydrocortisone cream for relief. If the cream doesn’t work or your symptoms worsen, consult a doctor to confirm a diagnosis and receive appropriate treatment.
